With some much to praise about FBH, it is hard to know where to begin! The house itself is simply beautiful – well-cared for, lovingly furnished and decorated, full of light, cosy, and with absolutely stunning views of the river (and, if you’re lucky, a kingfisher!). Everything you need is within walking distance: supermarkets, cafes and restaurants, bookshops, and many of the university libraries, museums, and colleges. Right across the street, there is a path along the river, and just five minutes up the street is the entrance to Christ Church Meadows, both of which are perfect for walks! I especially recommend staying here, if you are an academic – you’ll be in central Oxford, but it’ll be quiet, and the beauty of house and island are truly inspirational!
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, I unfortunately had to rearrange the dates and details of my stay at FBH several times – and I have never dealt with a more understanding, patient, and helpful owner and manager than Catriona! Both before and during my stay, she helped figure out good solutions for every issue, and she and her staff made me feel incredibly welcome at FBH, frequently checking in on me to make sure I was alright and whether I needed anything, be it a new lightbulb or an introduction to my neighbours. I always felt safe and well-cared for (which, I think, is even more noteworthy in times of a global pandemic). It’s been a true pleasure staying at FBH, and I can’t wait to return in the future!

I stayed in Folly Bridge House whilst I had a research fellowship at the University. The house is charming, quirky, decorated very thoughtfully and extremely well-located. The room I had was comfortable and super clean -- the housekeeping is excellent. The bathroom was small -- but everything worked, and the hot water service is very good. When I was a bit cold, I was given an extra heater straight away. In short: brilliant, I could not have asked for more.

"I wanted to thank you for my third summer at your creation--FBH! I will leave you with this observation about FBH. The island place you have restored with care and beauty makes many of the studio guests feel uplifted. Acting on the feeling, complete strangers are inspired to talk, become friendly on the steps, and share tea in the court yard, In short order, we are making community. This is the power of beauty. At FBH we are informed by the choices you've made and come to share some part of your vision. This is my round about way of sending you deep appreciation for the privilege of living with art and nature three past summers."

“FBH was an ideal residence for my semester in Oxford - an amazing location and a beautiful home away from home. It is an easy walk into town, across from Christ Church meadow, and on the Thames towpath – not to mention two blocks from supermarkets. The quality of the apartment and the décor allowed me to enjoy being home - something important, but rare, in a short-term rental. I can't wait to return, and would definitely stay at FBH on my next trip to Oxford.”
Dr Philippa Smith, Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand
Visiting Fellow, Oxford Internet Institute (Sept-Dec 2018)
“Folly Bridge House was the perfect set-up and location for me while a visiting fellow for three months at the Oxford Internet Institute. I cannot recommend FBH highly enough for its central location, the beautiful setting on the river, the impressive decor of the studio including original artworks and the friendliness and hospitality of staff there, ensuring all my needs were met. For me, FBH was a home away from home.”
Dr Andrey Kravchenko, Academic Visitor, Department of Computer Science, University of Oxford (Feb – Dec 2018)
I stayed at Folly Bridge House for a year in 2017-2018 when I was an academic visitor at Oxford’s Department of Computer Science. Folly Bridge House combines the central location and a river view with the quietness and tranquillity of being away from the main road. It’s ideal for both work and leisure related short visits to Oxford, as well as for longer stays.
Professor Katrina Poppe, Cardiovascular Research Group, University of Auckland
Folly Bridge House is, quite simply, an excellent place to stay in Oxford. The spaces are well thought out and I found it very comfortable to stay for a total of 3 months. It is central yet quiet, and has a peace that comes from overlooking the river from every studio. It has an uncontrived style, is clean and well maintained, yet not sterile. The very capable manager is friendly yet professional, welcoming, and nothing is a problem.
Tormod Heier, Norway's Defence University College in Oslo
Visiting Fellow, Oxford Changing Character of War Centre, Pembroke College
“Coming to Pembroke College, for a three months stay, Folly Bridge House was the perfect place for me. Situated nicely at the Thames, the House was only a five minutes walk from the College. And even better, outside the window - along the Thames - were endless paths and slopes for recreation and exercise. To me, the combination of close proximity to college and nature made the stay unforgettable.”
Professor Sheila Danko, Cornell University, USA and David Kuckuk
What a great place to live in Oxford! We spent seven weeks at FBH during the summer and found it a wonderful place from which to enjoy Oxford. Being off the main road on an island it is a quiet oasis removed from much of the hustle and bustle. We found both Rosa (our first foray into "small-space living") and Calendula to be delightful. Compact, yes, but lots of light and very livable. Calendula in particular is bewitching with its private patio and direct access to the water.

It gives me great pleasure to write this recommendation of the studio apartments of Folly Bridge House, Oxford. My husband and I resided at Folly Bridge House while on sabbatical at University College, Oxford, during Trinity Term. The house is uniquely situated on a small island in the middle of the Thames, with views of nature surrounding it. It is only a few steps from Oxford University's most celebrated sites and the colleges are within easy walking distance. The cosy studio apartment is tastefully furnished and decorated with original artwork, spotless and very well maintained. The studio, being on the water, offers complete privacy and quiet, a welcome retreat from the bustle of the town, while supermarkets, pubs and restaurants are just a few minutes' walk away. The flower garden provides an additional source of delight. The owner and manager were exceptionally kind and attentive. We recommend Folly Bridge House warmly, and would gladly stay there again.

Folly Bridge House is an oasis of magic, calm, and beauty. Perched right on the River Thames, it is tucked away from the bustle of Oxford and yet walking distance to the center of town and surrounding nature. There was great care from the proprietor and her staff to make sure my needs were quickly met. They often went out of their way in generosity and kindness to make my stay completely memorable and lovely. The Folly Bridge House is one of the best things about Oxford ~ I highly recommend staying here! Thank you

We stayed in Oxford for 3 weeks in July of 2018 and decided to choose Folly Bridge House to stay. I can genuinely say that it exceeded my expectations - Catriona and Elli are wonderful and really make you feel at home. We had made a mistake with our reservation and arrived 1 day before and Catriona was happy to accommodate us on that very day even though we only gave her 10 minutes notice of our mistake. The studios are full of character - we stayed in studio salvia which overlooks the river. It has all the functionalities and equipment that one needs for a short or long stay. It is unusually quiet, despite being on the city centre and close to all major attractions, and the views of the sunset over the river from our window were simply unforgettable. The communal areas are cleaned regularly and, at least in the summer, there were always flowers everywhere inside the building. This level of detail really makes one feel at home. I could not recommend it high enough, and will certainly be staying there again on my next visit to Oxford. It is very good value for money and both Catriona and Elli are always available to help! Thank you for such an enjoyable stay!!

Just wonderful! A visually stunning and quirky building, comfortable bed and spacious room. I loved sitting in the morning with my coffee overlooking the river. Centrally located yet quiet, we spent the day seeing the sights and it was lovely to have a short walk home with easy access to a nearby Tesco for supplies. You couldn't ask for lovelier hosts too.

What a fantastic place! We stayed here in April/May and it was so peaceful and the surroundings so beautiful. The owners were delightful - very helpful and welcoming. And what a view! We stayed in Salvia which although doesn't have en suite has a bathroom right next door shared with one other flat. Highly recommended!

I lived in Studio Melissa of this home for three months at the end of 2017. I have lived in 22 residences in my adult life, and this one was my absolute favorite. Now, there are a few caveats just based on personal preference. If you need a ton of space, a separated kitchen / bedroom / living room, then you may find the rooms a bit small. There is also not a ton of storage space if you have a lot of things. But I am just one woman who happily lives in cozy studios, and honestly the big windows make the room feel more expansive.
There are a lot of great things I could comment on, I will try to be brief:
-Management. The owner and cleaning staff at FBH are some of the most compassionate and considerate people I have ever come across in the housing industry (again, I've stayed in 22 places), as well as effective and clear communicators.
-Emotional space. I found that the balance of solitude to company was ideal for me. I had friendly relationships with other people in the building but also had a quiet space all to myself.
-The gardens. The gardens at FBH are incredibly lovely, and guests are encouraged to pick flowers from the gardens for their rooms. Staff keeps fresh flowers from the gardens in the stairwell. FBH is also behind a set of friendly but large gates, so you really do feel a bit like you step away from the city and onto your own private Eden when you cross the threshold.
-The immersion in river life. I think all the rooms in FBH have views of the Thames river on which it is situated. there are always ducks and geese and swans around. I found them to be incredibly soothing.
-Kitchen. The kitchen is compact but stocked with everything you might need, from a saucepan to a toaster to forks and knives.
-Linens. The bedding is quite soft.
-High quality Wifi.
-Intentionality. With the flowers, the quiet hours, the kind hellos from staff, the art collections, you can just tell that everything that is done at folly is done with the intent of making a lovely environment. This isn't a modern, sleek building, but it is an entirely lovely one at which you are helped to feel greatly at home.
Lots of stars. I love the place. :)

I have read through the reviews and not one is negative: that should tell you this is a great place.I saw nothing I disagreed with so rather than repeat what others have said, am going to make this a personal reaction to the Studio Calendula.I fell in love with it looking at rhe photos on the website and found I liked it even more when I got here and received such a warm reception from Ellie and Catriona. I am a river person so to live so close to the Thames— looking directly down st the water, watching and listening to ducks, geese, and swans, and seeing boats passing by was a dream come true. I loved the original art work and reading about the artists in the guest information book, the antique, though light and airy, furniture. the fresh flowers, the sun filled conservatory—- all contributed to my euphoria at being here. Although not exclusively, I would particularly recommend Folly Bridge House to women travelling alone, such as myself. The house has a graceful, peaceful feeling. It is also just a short, pleasant walk in to thriving, central Oxford. The new Westgate Mall, restaurants, the Colleges, Museums, boutiques and many, many other wonders of Oxford right on your doorstep. My room was in the basement, with views of the river - it was originally and tastefully decorated, and comfortable. Warm. And, importantly for me, very clean. I appreciated the homely elegance - much more preferable to most hotel rooms. They have some interesting art and fresh flowers! There is a private spot to sit riverside and appreciate the bird life and views of the Thames. The manager, went out of her way to make my stay enjoyable and nothing was too much trouble. Thank you.

I stayed in Folly Bridge with my 2 friends, and even that we expected something real great, the reality was overwhelming! First - we couldn't stop looking at the swans, who could be seen right from or windows. Second - after London we were stunned with silence and quietness. Third - we immediately released that this is TRUE ENGLAND - this is what we were looking for. We didn't really want to leave the place.... Were sitting by the window, and outside by the river, and enjoying fresh air and views. Later, when we managed to get out, we realized that we are real close to city center and all attractions. Nice restaurants near by and possibility to make quick snack right in the room. Unforgettable days in Oxford, mainly cause the hotel was the best possible choice! Thank you!

The building itself is very beautiful and unusual. The view is great! The staff is very friendly and attentive. If I ever return to Oxford I will stay only here. Thank you very much.

I stayed at the Folly Bridge House for about five weeks while I studied abroad in Oxford. The house is located in the middle of the river, and the grounds are beautiful. I was in the first floor room on the left, which not only has its own bathroom, but a private balcony overlooking the river. There is also a quaint garden with some chairs and tables out front that you can use to relax by the river. The house is a fairly short walk from the Oxford City Center, and there's plenty to do around town. The owners and groundskeepers are also super nice, and they're always around to help you if you need anything. I would highly recommend staying here!

Studio Borago was a lovely little retreat in a great location. It’s not exactly spacious but the views were fantastic and it’s only a couple of minutes’ walk away from the city centre. Our hosts were remarkably kind and welcoming. They made every effort to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. I also like the fact that the owners try to keep the house environmentally friendly. We really did enjoy our stay here and recommend the Folly Bridge House to anyone who is looking for a peaceful, well looked-after accommodation situated in a beautiful spot.

I had the opportunity, and chance!, to stay at Folly Bridge House for six months. It is not far from the city centre and the staff is quite friendly. The managers and owner are easy to reach. I was in Calendula, which is my favourite because of the little terrace next to the studio and window view on the river. It is well-equipped and although I stayed for a long time, with lots of personal belongings, the studio never seemed to be too small. I really appreciated the design of the room, as it made me feel at home. I think that tall and big people might find the bathroom a bit small but it was not inconveniance for me.

I stayed three weeks at Folly Bridge House, mainly in Papava Studio. A highly recommended unique Oxford experience. Tastefully decorated with a small balcony on the river. Lovely views of the quiet river flowing, busy ducks, as well as activity over Oxford's Folly Bridge. Well serviced with helpful staff. Very convenient location 10 minutes walk from the heart of Oxford shopping and museums. The fridge and cooking facilities in the studio room make self-catering easy and improve affordability of one's stay.

We spent seven weeks at FBH during the summer of 2015 and found it a wonderful place from which to enjoy Oxford. The location was perfect for us -a short walk to the center city (and the Christ Church Meadow) and immediately adjacent to the Thames towpath - great for walks and running. Being off the main road on an island it is a quiet oasis removed from much of the hustle and bustle. Very convenient to a local grocery and, of course, cafe. The quality of the space and outfitting- furnishings, artwork- is very high. We found both Rosa (our first foray into "small-space living") and Calendula to be delightful. Compact, yes, but lots of light and very livable. Calendula in particular is bewitching with its private patio and direct access to the water. We found the kitchens and pod-baths to work well. The only issues for us were our preference for stiffer mattresses and larger tvs for our aging eyes! Take seriously the admonition to travel light - storage is a premium and we were glad we did. We found both the owner and manager to be delightful to know, very caring and responsive. The other guests were quiet and considerate - we formed a delightful friendship with several others who stayed at the same time. Our schedule will take us back to Oxford a couple of times over the next year and our hope is to once again take up residence at Folly Bridge House.

We stayed here for two nights whilst in Oxford for a memorial service and it was such a lovely place! From the window we looked directly onto the river and the light playing on the water reflected into the room was truly magical. We had our breakfast in the sun on the terrace watching the swans gliding past which was fantastic. The paintings and artwork were so lovely too. A really comfortable stay and we hope to return!

I stayed at FBH for two weeks during a training course. For me it was the perfect place within walking distance of the colleges and city centre. Its surroundings are peaceful as it is situated beside the river and the house is very charming. I stayed is studio borago which was fine and equipped with everything. I would recommend a short stay because that studio is one the small side. During your stay you are wel taken care of with any questions you have and the booking process is very efficient. All in all a great place which allows you to explore Oxford.

Located within a short walking distance to the city center of Oxford, Folly Bridge House with its gorgeous surroundings is the perfect retreat. The view of the river, presence of nature and the cute ducks and geese provide a calming and aesthetically fulfilling environment, and the modest lighting by the river bank allows the stars to shine brightly as night falls. The house itself is charming and well maintained. The studios are quite small, but bright and cosy. The owner and manager are both wonderful people, immensely service minded and friendly toward their guests. My 4 month stay in the Folly Bridge House felt calming, homely and safe, enhancing my experience of lovely Oxford.

I spent 6 months at Folly Bridge House, 3 months in Studio Borago and 3 months in Studio Melissa. Both were lovely well equipped rooms although Borago is rather on the small side and the shared bathrooms are compact. The location could not be better, right next to the river and the Christ Church grounds which are delightful to walk around. It is very central and as Oxford is not the largest place I found everything to be within walking distance, in my 6 months there I never had the need to take a bus or drive. There is a Tesco minutes away and the train station is only a 20 minute walk. All in all I enjoyed my stay at Folly Bridge House, particularly my time in Studio Melissa and would highly recommend it if visiting Oxford.

I can only echo previous reviews of Folly Bridge House. It is a delightful place from which to explore Oxford and being next to the Thames it is easy to have a daily river walk as well as being just a 10 min stroll into the centre of town. The rooms are tastefully decorated and equipped with the basics needed for cooking. The wifi works well as does the heating (I stayed for 8 weeks in winter). If you are in an ensuite room, the shower room is tiny, but the water pressure is good as is the extraction system. It is a lovely and quiet location for anyone that needs to study/work while there. Helpful and friendly staff. Will definitely be back!

Folly Bridge House is, quite simply, an excellent place to stay in Oxford. It is in a great location, with a Tesco metro a block and a half away, and the town centre a 10 minute walk. Many buses, including buses to London, are a 5 minute walk away. And it is only a 20 minute walk to the train (or a taxi that costs £5-6). The house can be a little difficult for taxis to get in and out of as the driveway opens directly on to a moderately busy road/bridge, with little to no spare room to pull to the side. They can go down the driveway to the parking spaces out the front of the house, but if the carpark is full, it can be difficult for them to turn around to get out again. If you are arriving from the train and are happy to carry your luggage a hundred or so metres down the road, I’d suggest asking the driver to pull in to the driveway of The Head of the River pub, which is across the road and at the start of the bridge you need to walk along. The photos on the website don’t tend to show this but there is good storage. Rooms have a wardrobe that also contains shelves and/or drawers, and there are a good number of solid clothes hangers. The kitchens are tastefully stocked, with good cutlery and crockery. There is free use of a clothes washing machine and good clothes racks in each room. A dryer is also available (pay per use, with proceeds going to an environmental charity). The spaces are well thought out and I found it very comfortable to stay for a total of 3 months. I moved between three different rooms (as I hadn’t committed to the whole time at the start of my stay) and enjoyed each of the rooms I stayed in. Two had their own bathroom and one shared a bathroom with one other room. The bathrooms that are in the rooms (ie. not shared) are small but well designed. My 6’5” tall partner stayed for a few weeks and he coped with the bathrooms just fine. However if someone was very wide, it may become a bit of a squeeze. To summarise, I highly recommend Folly Bridge House. It is central yet quiet, and has a peace that comes from overlooking the river from every room. It has an uncontrived style, is clean and well maintained, yet not sterile. Michelle, the very capable manager, is friendly yet professional, welcoming, and nothing is a problem. Both Michelle and the property’s owner were easy to contact and quick to follow up on any question or concern.

We celebrated my birthday in Studio Papaver, with its beautiful crenellated balcony overlooking the Thames. This is a very special place to stay, and you can see that the owners have put a great deal of thought and effort into preparing each studio flat (I looked at several of them). The location is fantastic in terms of convenience and surroundings. It is very comfortable, and you can cook a simple meal or just step downstairs to a riverside restaurant (a minute away) or pub (3 minutes away). I can't think of anywhere better to stay if you have several days in Oxford, as it works out great value for money, especially for a couple.

Who could have thought in the heart of a town Oxford you could find such a haven, breakfast on a rampart style balcony? So peaceful and quiet looking over water watching boats and ducks. My stay was so relaxing and enjoyable with everything catered for. Also a very comfortable bed. Drinks on the ram-parted roof top with the most magnificent view. a complete panorama of the Oxford city of spires The combination of a superb central location, hospitality yet complete independence, breakfast when ever you like, all the facilities nearby and restaurant on your doorstep on the river, I dined there with a large party . Myself and my partner stayed in studio Calandula on a long term basis, for many many months. We loved staying at FBH, the room was lovely, the view is second to none! We were right by the river with a door in the room that actually opened out on to the river itself! The ducks, swans and geese used to come up to the door...what a lovely thing to wake up too! Fantastic location a few mins from town, yet by such lovely nature. The facilities we great for us, en-suite, kitchenette (which was stocked with crockery and utensils), the rooms itself was well equipped. We even had underfloor heating, such a treat in the winter months! We had good access to laundry facilities. The house was well managed and the booking process was easy. We even had parking! Which is rare so close to the town centre where many of the places to park are residents only. The room had lovely original art work in it, which was so nice, the room has obviously been carefully thought out and decorated. The fresh flowers from the garden on arrival were a lovely touch. We felt pampered! Being on an island was a great experience, surrounded by water and charm. There was a lovely riverside bench in the garden which we used to sit at to have a cup of tea, or glass of wine in the evening! As residents we also received a discount at the The Folly, the riverside restaurant next to the house! What more could you want! We were sad to leave! If you are looking for somewhere to stay in Oxford there really is no where better, or more beautiful!

We stayed in studio Papaver for a week in early July. This studio has a small balcony over looking the Thames, and is ideal to sip a wine and watch the ducks and the occasional narrow boat cruise under Folly Bridge. It is an easy 10 minute walk to the centre of Oxford with lots of pubs and restaurants on the way. The only issue with the studio is the tiny bathroom-toilet [ think caravan size] but it is functional if you are not too big. Folly Bridge is truly a gem and I would not stay anywhere else in Oxford next visit
